WRITING OBSTACLE

Inspired by Maranda Quinn

Write a story in which there are no human characters.

The story can include anything else, although it doesn't have to have sentient characters, or it could have no characters at all!

Falcons

“Sapphire we have a problem,” the falcon touched her friend with her wing. “I think I can see that,” the blue falcon with sapphires under her eyes said, frustration hinted. There were explosions on the screen in front of them. “You think that that's how they say hello?” I ask sarcastically. “I think that's how they say _goodbye_.” I press controls trying to send the rocket ship to Earth. It’s hopeless. My orange wings clash with Sapphire's vibrant blue. If we were to die, we would die together. We both knew that. The screen flashed a red warning: unstable ship. The ship was going to go down. But we weren’t going down with it. “Are you ready?” I ask my partner. “Of course,” she shook out her wings. “For the gods!” I shout as my wings spread going against the forces of the Milky Way. My breathing shortens. I dive towards the earth. This is the only chance we have. I grab Sapphire.

I wake up in green grass. A blue wing covers my face. There is no bird though. Just a wing. Covered in sapphires. Then I knew. My best friend had been eaten. Eaten by a feline. I scream at the top of my lungs. Sapphire was gone. And I wasn't. I had to get revenge. I fly to the highest tree and search the land. Then I see a cat. She has black silky fur that camouflages like a shadow. I dive at her screeching. “Oh my- wait stop, I'm friendly!” she hisses at me. “Birdie watcha doing round’ these parts?” she purrs petting me. “Why aren't you eating me? Also, did you eat my friend? Also, why should I trust you? You are literally like my sworn enemy.” “One question at a time, I'm vegetarian, unlike my _relatives_. I did not eat your friend, and I'm charming,” she purred like a model. “Good try foxy,” I say. “Why are you birds so smart? Well, guess I'll have an early dinner.” She smiles wickedly. “I've never tried chicken,” she pounces on me. I let her. It's just the way things work, I'll see Sapphire soon, pray to the gods. At least she had a courageous end. The world went black.
