The Lake

The Lake.

Some people think that these two words are just soothing and calm.

But not for me.

Especially since I’m the one who committed this crime.

I haven’t told anyone yet. Why would I? I would get sent to the police station immediately.

But then, why am I here?

I guess I have no choice since it is a school field trip.

Summer is walking next to me for no reason at all. I am just the girl who stays in the corner and never really talks to anyone but herself. But Miss Crandall did say we had to from the buddy system and somehow, she ended up being mine.

I look ahead and hold in my breath as I see the water up ahead of the Lake glistening in the sunlight. Summer looks at me strangely like I just saw a ghost.

Which in this case, I did.

Mrs. Crandall said that we can explore the Lake. For some reason, Summer takes my hand and leads me towards the end of the dock.

“Come on.” She insists. With each step I take, I fell my breath some down as memories start washing over me.

We finally reach the end of the dock, and Summer takes a large breath in.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” She says.

I nod, just because I have to.

“Summer- I,”

“I know what you did.” She says clearly.

“What?” Is all I say.

“You pushed Kellie into the lake.”

“How do you know this?” I ask getting mad.

“I saw it happen. I was taking a jog into the woods and saw it all happen before my eyes.” Summer explains.

“You-“

“You know I could just take you to the police and get you in trouble, right?”

“So why don’t you?” I say my anger rising.

“I won’t though. I know how hard that would be.”

I stand there quietly, not speaking a word.

“Summer, you know the consequences for this, right?” I say slowly.

“Um, sorry, come again?” Summer says confused.

“You heard me.” I say lightly.

And with that, I push her into the drowning lake.

Summer comes up almost immediately, but she can’t swim in this lake.

“Why- why can’t I swim?!” Summer screams.

“It’s the Lake. Not you.” I smile cunningly.

“Hey, you don’t have to do this!!”

“I can’t trust anyone anymore.” And with that, I walk away.

“Where’s Summer?” Miss Crandall asks all of us.

I shrug slowly just like everyone else does.

“She might have gone ahead of the group.” I suggest, knowing that she’ll buy this fact.

“Oh. Okay then. Come on Class!”

We all start to follow her, everyone having buddies at their sides.

But not me.
