Locked In

“I’m locked in” I told her

My lips on the keyhole

Her short panicked breathing

Echoed through the wood

“I’ll find it” she told me

“The key that will open

This room that you’re trapped in”

She promised she would

I listened for footsteps

Grown fainter and fainter

As she scurries away

On a futile pursuit

The key in the corner

All filthy and rusted

Smiles at me smugly

Beneath tangled roots

Alone in this closet

Dirt floors and cracked windows

I’ve never felt better

I’m finally free

I’ll let her run rampant

Like a headless chicken

Unaware she’s no savior

For I have the key
