POEM STARTER
How could something so small take up so much space in my heart?
Compose a poem inspired by this question.
See Love Grow
He’s just a tiny person now
He takes no room at all.
But every time I look at him
My heart to me does call.
I know I ever love his mother
But of this I don’t know a thing
I never would have imagined
What new love a child could bring.
For the love I feel for my new child
Is different than for his mother
For when I said the day we wed
That I could not love another
I did not know the capacity
Of the heart inside my chest
For this tiny thing I call my child
Asks for love beyond my best.
For this tiny person who I do love
Shows me love is a choice I make
Like when I vowed to my one wife
All others I would forsake.
But the love I have for my new child
Is a love I could not foresee
It has shown me love’s great depths
Are well beyond my capacity.
Still, I know that love does grow
As our family grows too
My heart stays true, I say “I love you,”
To you, you, you, and you.
Still, I never knew that love
Could grow beyond our family tree.
But then again, I suppose I can
See love grow exponentially.
