The Light

The fireplace roars, shielding me from those that lurk in the dark. Shadows don’t exist here, for there is dark, and there is safety. A shiver assaults my spine, forcing my head to turn towards it. They’re watching. Bodiless beings float freely through what doesn’t exist, waiting. My fireplace flickers, and a cackle comes from the nothingness enveloping the room. I wish it would leave, that I could do anything to stop it from spreading further. It’s not possible. I must sit here, with uneven breaths, waiting for my eternal fate to reach me. It has been alright so far, but my flame is about to go out.
