POEM STARTER

Mysteries of the Night

Whether something natural and beautiful like the stars, or something more sinister, write a poem that focuses on things that are most prominent at night.

How Did We Get Here?

It’s cold outside.

And yet everything feels so warm.

So right.

With you by my side.

We look into each others eyes.

With whispers of “Hi”

And then a stretch of silence.

And then a “you truly are my favorite”

A code for something more.

“And your mine”

My only reply.

As I bury my face in your shoulders.

My arms around your neck.

You look at me.

like I’m everything.

More than the sun.

More than the stars.

Even more than the moonlight.

You hold me like you don’t want to let go.

Tightly but softly.

And then your head resting against mine.

With tension in our gaze.

But I can tell you’re nervous.

Wanting, trying, but so scared.

Scared to lose this moment.

Of just you and me.

A moment after 9:05.

I’m nervous too.

But I stay.

Leaning into you.

Leaning into me.

You kiss me on the head.

And then the cheek.

Repeat.

And stay there for a while

Never letting go.

I’m aware of every breath.

Every look.

Every beat of the heart.

Every kiss.

Every hug.

We leave with a “goodnight”.

With heat swimming in our eyes

Our minds.

And I watch you walk off.

With one last look.

I drive away.

My mind playing back every moment.

The mysteries of us stuck in my heart.
