The Past
Gravel crunched beneath my feet as I approached the decrepit hospital nearly falling apart at it's seams. The vines strangling the cracked stone walls appeared as though they were the glue holding the building together. I took a deep breath as I continue in attempt to ease my anxiety. Being sent to places like this was common for someone with my abilities, but it never fails to make me sick to my stomach approaching these situations.
The pounding in my ears intensifies as I push through the doorframe, energy flooding my veins making me almost blackout. The corners of my vision started to darken as I feel a hand press against my shoulder to steady me.
"Just breath Brennan. Let's keep moving." my partner, Clara, mumbles in as much shock of the environment as me.
Two desks mark the left and right sides of the entryway, with dried pools of blood staining the floor and chairs strewn about what used to be the waiting room. Dust and debris line the grounds leading to the first hallway behind the desks to the elevators. I push a gurney out of the entrance to the stairs and shove the door open. We start walking up the flight of stairs until I start to feel the intense rush of energy crawling under my skin again, begging to be released. I shut my eyes and give in to the urge as memories start to flash. Not my memories, but memories of the people who were here before me.
"This way." I suggested, leading us out of the stairwell and into an open hallway.
Memories continued to flash behind my eyes of the disaster that occurred here. People screaming, children crying, and doctors and nurses trying to rush people to safety.
"Please, help!" a faint scream echoed down the hallway and around the corner. I picked up my pace leaving Clara behind me.
“Brennan-“ I hear her footsteps thundering down the hallway after me but I don’t stop. I quickly glance behind me as I move forward but don’t see her anywhere.
My blood hums as the florescent lights in the ceiling and the crowds of people from the flashing memories, suddenly begin to solidify- _I’m now in the past_. I begin to turn right down the hallway following the echoed scream for help as a man rounds the corner at the same time as me, my blood chilling as he passes completely through me.
I turn around to face the phantom of a man, but doesn’t turn to face me. His black cloak going utterly still within an instant. I start to take a step towards him, but he takes off sprinting down the hallway.
Within an instant I’m barreling after the man, something in my gut is telling me I need to follow him. _He knows what’s happening here. No- he is what’s happening here._
_ _I continue running after him, barely gaining on him. _Damn he’s quick_. I follow him through the maze of hallways, taking note of the lack of people who have seemed to fade away the faster I move. The man halts to a stop, pulling something out of his pocket then pauses. Now’s my chance. I run full force towards the man, catching up quickly.
“Stop.” I groaned, about 10 feet from the man now. “I know you can hear me.” The man glances back but I can’t get a good look at his face. He turns left into a room shutting the door behind him. A flash of light exudes from under the door and within an instant I’m back in the present.
Clara. I need to find Clara. I look around at where I am but I don’t recognize my surroundings and I’m no longer in a hallway. I spin on my heels as energy pulses through my body forcing me to stare at the corner of the room. A dark figure appears in the shadows.
“You won’t find what you’re looking for here.” His voice slithers through my entire being rattling my bones. Before I can say anything he takes a step out of the shadows and I instantly recognize him as the cloaked man I was following in the past. He takes another step forward taking his hood off to let me see his face. But it’s not his face it’s mine. I’m staring directly at myself.
