Best Friend

You know the feeling you get when you look at someone and know something isn't right?

That's how Beatrice feels right now.

Beatrice has known Wynnie her entire life. They were as thick as thieves. Practically sisters. But at this very moment—she didn't know who Wynnie was.

Her usual cute, colorful pigtails were loose from its hair ties. Allowing her hair to cascade freely down her back. Her pretty coral colored dress was tainted with blood. And her eyes...Beatrice could barely her her irises and Wynnie smiled sadistically.

"Wynnie...wh-what are you doing?"

Wynnie cocks her head to the left. As if she were a dog picking up on what her owner said. "What am I doing? Well...I'm getting rid of your problem."

Beatrice scoffed. Albeit her scoff sounded like a choke as the tears welled in her eyes. She looks down at the body behind Wynnie. The man she once considered her love, her happiness, her savior was now gone. She couldn't believe that Wynnie was able to take down such a big man. But he wasn't the problem. How could she think like that of him? "Problem? How was he a problem?! He didn't nothing to me or you!"

"HE WAS MANIPULATING YOU! He was using you Bea. How could you not see this?"

"He loved me Wynnie he never did anything wrong!"

"You were only a part of the plan! You were nothing to him."

Beatrice was taken aback. Plan? What does she mean? And by the contorted look of shame that barely passed her best friend's face. She knew that she was never supposed to know. "Wyn...what plan?"

Wynnie turns he head away in defeat. The adrenaline subsiding and replacing her face with guilt. "My parents made a deal with him long ago when we were kids. If he could find a way to overthrow your parents and take over the multimillion dollar company my parents would be able to obtain and small percentage of the company. The..."love" you two had was spontaneous. But he made it a part of his plan because he felt that this would be much easier and smoother to follow through."

Wynnie takes a step forward. But Beatrice steps back. Her heart was racing so fast she could feel it in her throat. This couldn't be right, she thought. How did she never sense that anything was amiss? "So...was being friends with me for such a long time...was it fake too?"

Wynnie shook her head and clasped the bewildered woman's hands. "No no no! I mean…at first. But I didn’t understand that my parents had something in store that would cause your family harm. But you’re really my best friend. I mean it. I cherish every moment we’ve had together. All the laughs, cries, gossip. All of it…it was real. The happiness I felt from being by your side all the time was real. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t have betrayed him nor my parents for doing this.”

When Wynnie let go, Beatrice looks down at her hands. Studying the bloody residue left behind. She releases a shaky sigh and steps back until she was able to feel the door that led her to freedom. “I want you gone out of my life”, Beatrice hissed. “I want nothing to do with you anymore. I don’t trust you and I will never willingly give that trust back to you. I…I don’t know who you are anymore!”

As quickly as she could. Beatrice opens the door runs straight for her car. She could hear Wynnie call out to her and chase after her. The blonde made it in time and slammed her car door shut before starting the engine and racing off. Away from the danger. She tried not to look back. But when she did, she could see Wynnie just standing in the middle of the gravel driveway. An angered and dangerous demeanor surrounded her which gave Beatrice goosebumps.

She’s not who she said she is. I don’t know who she is anymore.

And with that thought, she let the last few tears roll down her rosy cheeks before huffing and stepping harder in the pedal.
