The Pale Man

Across the street in the rain a pale man in a black coat holding an umbrella stares at me. His huge eyes glow with a pale green light. I can see him through passing cars and people walking on the sidewalk. I stare back. As the minutes pass his unwavering gaze fills me with fear.

Suddenly he disappears. A wave of relief washes over me. Just as I thought it was all over a strange feeling washed over my back. I turn and look through the hotel doors. Down the lobby beside the elevator stands the pale man. His eyes focus on me and my heart starts racing. Turning away from me he steps into the elevator. My legs carry me inside listening to a will other than my own. They take me to the elevator.

Inside the elevator a green substance marks the button for the top floor. My hand reaches it and presses the button. Inside I scream trying to regain control. But my body doesn’t listen.

The elevator dings and the doors open. In the hall way a green trail leads to the stairs. My body follows it. My hand opens the door to the stairs follows the path to the roof.

My body walks out on to the roof. I follow the green trail with my eyes and find the pale man. He float in the open air beyond the edge of the roof. Behind him lightning dances across gray clouds. His will carries my body closer to him. A cold sweat covers my body and a my heart races.

Finally my body reaches the edge. The pale man watches me with a blank face. Blood pulses in my ear. I want to scream by my mouth and lungs won’t work. My legs step over the edge. I fall. Above me the pale man laughs. Soon I fade into darkness.

I wake up on cold wet concrete. I look over myself and see that I’m still alive. Maybe it was a dream. I stand up and look across the street. My body goes stiff with fear. Under a black umbrella a pale face with glowing green eyes smiles at me.
