A Good Day
We laugh, me and my sister racing to see who can get in first. It’s always been a race.
Everyone in town says we’re the best barista’s. And everyone knows it’s always a race between us. Who can get to the coffee first?
We laugh and lunge forward. There’s a crash and coffee beans spill all over the floor. We’re laughing and covered in coffee and old Mrs Marraway is standing outside the shop, looking through the window and laughing too.
[present day]
I scream. Running as fast as I can. It’s a race. I realise it’s always been a race.
No-one knows life is a race. A race against death.
I scream and lunge forward, trying to get around the corner in time.
Bang!
I don’t recognise the pain as I fall to the floor. I don’t feel it. I’m lying on the floor. I know I’m bleeding. Don’t feel the bullet wound.
The pebbles in the dark, they… Look a little like coffee beans.
I laugh my last and fade away, smiling in the memory of a good day.
