Remembrance
For years I’ve had strange memories. They’re vivid and in my mind, but I feel as though they don’t belong to me.
Every night I stay awake. All I can do is sit and watch the images play before me.
As a young dropout, I’ve found that I have nothing else better to do with my time.
Today, I will find out who those memories truly belong to.
“Are you ready?” The frail woman standing before me asks.
I nod my head.
She sits me down in my living room couch.
“Close your eyes,” I do as she says and see nothing. “what do you want to achieve from this?”
I take a deep breath in.
“I want to know who these memories belong to and why I need to see them.”
“Very well.”
She then began to ask me a series of questions. I felt my body relaxing and slowly her voice set me in a trance. Euphoria overcame me as she spoke and I slipped away.
I awake to the sight of grey mist. I’m lying on my back and see silver birch towering over me. I’m not sure why I knew that.
I sit up and look around to a familiar environment. Dad would kill me if he knew I was out here without him.
My heart begins to race. My thoughts keep getting interrupted with someone else’s voice. I run my small hands through my long golden locks. Okay so I’m a girl now.
I slowly get to my feet and look around. Something drew me to this forest, for whatever reason I was here.
In the distance I hear bronze clanging. The sound of church bells reverberating can be heard.
My heart dropped. There are no churches here. I know this. I can’t explain why, I just know this.
Footsteps can be heard in the distance, bounding towards me. Fear ran through my body as the footsteps came closer.
If I don’t run, I will die.
It’s happened before, yet, I find myself planted right where I’m standing.
She’s out there.
Without any hesitation I run towards the source of the footsteps.
