One Day

There couldn’t have been a more cloudy day.

I stand with my back to the cold wall

In a corner bookstore,

sitting high upon the shelf was a book titled

“You need help?”

As I reach for the book

The first page reads

“Let them be, if it’s meant to be, it will be”

As I gather air back into my lungs

I quietly put the book back into its place

Right away seeing your face.

I blink in hopes it’s a vision

One I see of you nearly every day.

But I soon realize it’s not.

You pick up the book just as I left it

Scanning your eyes upon the first page.

As you breathe for air

I feel mine become taken.

“Maybe one day, maybe not” you whisper
