A HANGING AT HIGH NOON

The crowd was a mob down at city hall. They shouted and yelled and were ready to brawl. Some of them had pitchforks and others had torches. Bysyanders watched from the edges of porches. The mayor was there, the target of town. He pleaded for peace as the sun went down. All of this over a hanging at high noon. Set in the town of Dust in mid June.

"Lets Hang 'em I hope!" Yelled a Man with a rope.

"Then Justice is served!" A loud woman observed.

"Terrance was used!" Another accused.

"He shouldn't have died!" A hysteric woman cried.

A gunshot rang out into the air. Stopping everyone dead with a scare. The sheriff walked up, his revolver pointed to the sky. He had the silent attention now of all who stood by.

"Now I'm going to say a few words here today. And you're all just going to have to listen to them, okay?"

The crowd looked at eachother unsure what to do. Then they decided they would hear him through.

"This whole town loved Terrenace, I certainly did. He was my brother and a pretty good kid. He was found guilty for better or worse. But you're clouding the facts while you converse. I know he helped you and picked up the slack. But he was still very capable of shooting Tex in the back. I have something Im ashamed to admit. Terrance was a theif and I let him get away with it. He stole from Tex and started a feud. And you all know Tex had such a foul mood. What you didnt know was that Tex asked Terrance to duel. And Terrance accepted, agreeing to the western rule. But Terrance got nervous late that night. He snuck upon Tex and shot him dead in the moonlight. I loved my brother, but he's guilty I know. You should stop blaming the mayor and let this one go."

The crowd started to mutter and speak hereabouts. Some were convinced, others held doubts.

An old man came forward, his expression still mad. "I knew the boy, he earned all that he had! Never stole a penny as far as I'm concerned. Both you and the mayor should be burned!"

"Im telling you now, thats how it went down." The Sheriff exasperated with a frown. "Don't blame the mayor he was just doing his job. There's no reason to come against him in a mob."

The crowd angered again, feeding the flame. Now to the sheriff they shifted their blame.

"You let him steal?" A lady questioned with zeal.

"How much did you help!?" Barked a young little whelp.

An elderly woman approached from the side. She held her chin high with sternness and pride. "You got Tex killed and same with your brother! I feel sick and so should your mother!"

"I know I did wrong, and I know I am at fault. So I wont blame you if you wash my eyes out with salt."

"Ahem, I think I have something to say." The mayor looked over, trying to save the day. But to the Sheriff's horror it wasnt in his defense. The mayor decided to join the offence.

"Take him by force he's the one! Grab him now in the setting sun!"

The crowd advanced on the Sheriff, disarming the man. Then they tied him up, according to plan. They looked to the mayor on what to do next. The mayor tipped his hat to the crowd, with all due respects.

"Don't worry my people, You'll have justice soon. I think we will have a hanging at high noon."
