POEM STARTER

Life in Your Hands

Write a poem or short story about if you were death and had to choose each day who must die.

Nothing Personal

I do not hate, I do not love,

I do not answer skies above.

No prayers, no pleas can make me wait—

I simply am. I simply take.

I walk unseen, a fleeting breath,

a whisper soft, a brush of death.

A child laughs, a mother sings,

a lover dreams of wedding rings—

I pass them by. Not yet. Not yet.

But he who runs with frantic feet,

she who sleeps where highways meet,

the one who sways on aching knees—

their time is set, their pulse is seized.

Not out of malice, not by choice,

I do not hear the trembling voice.

It’s nothing cruel, it’s nothing planned,

no mercy stays my steady hand.

Tomorrow brings another name,

another soul, another claim.

No weight, no grief, no heart to chime—

I move untouched. It isn’t mine.
