The Woods

“Is that what I think it is?” Roman asks. He looks petrified. His skin is pale and sweat is starting to bead on his brow.

“I would say so. I don’t think people are just dumping mannequins around here Roman.”

“Lidia, how are you so calm about this? We just found a body in the woods! Oh no, I think I’m going to puke,” Roman exclaimed. He runs a few feet’s before he starts puking his guts up.

I can’t look away from the rotting corpse. I know it’s a male by the body, but I can’t tell who it might be. Squatting down to get a closer look, I reach for the pockets of its pants.

“I wouldn’t do that if I was you,” Lidia says calmly. Glancing up at her, I can see that her eyes are dark. “You don’t want your dna on it if someone else comes along and tries to report what they found.”

“You mean we’re not going to report this?” Roman screams as he clutches onto one of the nearby trees.

“Oh shut up you idiot,” Lidia snaps. “If someone catches us out here we’re fucked. We aren’t supposed to be in the woods anyways. Our parents will be pissed and ground us forever.”

Lidia is right. We aren’t supposed to be in the woods. This is the only place they tell us not to go. Standing up and backing away from the body I say, “Come on guys. She’s right.”

I start to turn away when Roman says, “Luke we can’t just leave it here. Someone needs to know.”

“No, they don’t. Listen to me, if anyone finds out we were here, you’ll be next. Don’t go blabbering about it.”

Lidia smiles and starts walking away as I stare at Roman. “Are you coming or not?” Roman doesn’t reply as he follows Lidia.

I pray he doesn’t go running his mouth. I wouldn’t want to have another man’s blood on my hands again.
