COMPETITION PROMPT
Write a poem centered around one of the elements: earth, air, fire, or water.
the lifetime of water
Blanketing the globe,
its touch cools the burning, scarred rock
beneath;
projectile bubbles of oxygen
float past static jellyfish,
journeying towards
the scorching rays of sunlight above.
Popping as they breach the surface,
the air inside is released and
joins the molecular collection of
elements inhabiting the
breathable void
inside the atmosphere.
Currents of wind whip violently,
updrafts lift the atoms towards
sky-mother above.
Her chest:
voluptuous, full-bodied.
Fluffy white clouds,
the embodiment of purity on this
lovely day;
blue sky surrounds them on all sides
as they drift ever-slowly,
no particular destination in mind:
entrusted to the will of the winds.
Over luscious green jungle,
where plant life’s abounding,
their hue shifts to greyscale,
volume sheds as they weep.
Colliding with darkened soil,
splashing down into rivers,
white-tipped tongues of the rapids
swell greater,
fed by dreary skies.
Some days, some months later,
trees rooted at the shoreline
bear fruits
for their neighbors,
native men to enjoy.
Clad only in loincloths,
said humans find sustenance
in mangos bursting with flavor,
in coconuts brimming with flesh.
At the riverside
they rejoice,
toes cooled by the shallows;
buckets heavy with crystalline water:
refreshments ready for a feast!
Those same droplets from rainclouds
are ingested by lovers
as they dance by the fire
through the dark of the night.
As dirt cakes on their bare feet,
their cells swell,
hydrated
and the cycle of water
is finally complete.
