POEM STARTER
Submitted by Olivia Grace
“Sometimes we fall in love with ideas, not people.”
Use this as a line or theme in a poem or short story.
You.
You were all I ever wanted
You were the sun and moon
The clouds and the stars
You were everything that made my head spin and the earth revolve
Your early morning kisses
Would awaken me from my dreams
That’s what I told myself
As I went to sleep
Your little heartfelt notes
Would make me feel loved
An unfamiliar feeling
That I knew would be enough
But you never came
With my early morning kisses
Or my heartfelt notes
Or the feeling of being loved
You were just a picture
That I painted in my head
Nothing like the horror
With whom I shared a bed
Your scattered pill capsules
And thrown glass bottles
Haunt my nightmares and daydreams
Your shirt smelt like cigarettes
Instead of cologne
Your love was bipolar
Two-faced and addictive
I always expected things to get better
Until that autumn night
When everything got worse than a fight
Calling the police stark naked
Violated and vile
My body shuddered with each gasping breath
Blood on my skin
Dripping from my head
I wonder if you’re still behind bars
I wonder if your sentence is up
I wonder if you found someone else to love
I wonder why I still wonder
When I told myself that day
That as you went to prison
You were taking my trauma away
