King’s Feast

King Alexander, Queen Rose, their five children, and all of the officials sat down for the annual King's feast. It was a feast to celebrate the year and to plan for the one coming up. Except it never went as planned.

"We can't raise the taxes on the people!" This was shouted by one of the youngest men there, a man who could barely be counted as a man, his beard not yet fully grown.

"You do not know the customs of this land." the king boomed before slamming his fist down upon the table, causing the cups to shake, dangerously close to spilling their contents.

"But I know what the people need!" the young man shouted back.

Queen Rose had pulled her children back, she knew not to let them in their father's sight, or else he might turn his wrath on them. The other officials had become quiet as well, trying to decide whether they would stand by their king no matter what, or stand by what they knew was right.

Everyone had stopped eating, longing for the Feast to be over. The king and the official continued shouting at one another, faces red and veins bulging. Their speeches were accompanied by frequent banging on the table. The servants crept towards the table at intervals, collecting the dishes so they wouldn't break.

The argument lasted most of the night, surprising everyone there. Usually, when the king got into an argument, the other person was either fired or dead after an hour. The only problem with it lasting so long is that no one was allowed to leave the table under the king did. And it seemed he was very content to stay there all night.

The younger children grew tired and laid their heads on the table to go to sleep. Some of the oldest officials did that as well, their snores vibrating the table. The king and the official eventually calmed down, and the king stalked off to his rooms, wiping the sweat off of his face. The official stood there panting for a few moments before collecting himself and going to his own room.

The queen quietly thanked everyone who was left before leading her children to the nursery. This was one of the worst Feasts there had been for many years, usually they could at least finish appetizers before the king began arguing over something. They could barely touch their meals this time.

Everyone there hoped that the king would begin to see the official's side before the next year, as no one wanted to have such a disastrous King's Feast again.
