Magic

“Magic is life young one. You have to respect it.” Professor Finn said. Ever since I was little I had a connection to magic, and when I came of age, Professor Finn chose me as his apprentice. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Well, because it was. Hi, my name is Ember but everyone calls me Esko. Just yesterday I was chosen to be taught they ways of magic. This was my first lesson.

“Now show me what you can do.” He said. I grinned. I took a deep breath. The tips of my fingers tingled, my feet shifted instinctively. The wind began to pick up. Leaves lifted off the ground. I took another deep breath. Small pebbles flung around in the wind. Closing my eyes I shifted my weight from my right foot to me left. Leaning back slightly I raised my arm over my head.

_You will never be a true mage. _The negative voices lingered in my mind. _You think you’re so powerful ha! You’re just lucky. _I tried to block out the voices. The wind faltered. With another deep breath I let the wind die down. My arms felt like jelly as they crossed over my chest. “Good job.” Professor Finn said.

That night, when everyone was asleep, I crept out of my bedroom. Once I was sure I could get away, I mounted my horse.

“Lets go Destiny.” I said to my gelding. Destiny started to gallop, as she has done many times before. Once I was hidden, deep in the forest, I climbed the tallest tree. Some of the smaller branches tugged at my hood. I got to the top easily. Looking up at the stars I opened my mind to the possibilities.

A woman’s voice rang in my ears.

“All magic has a price.” She said, her voice like stilk. “Are you willing to pay it?”

“Yes.” I said with determination. “I am.”
