End of a bright star

“This is golden, how did you get all of this? Bribery, tax evasion, fraudery, all with evidence too!”

John light his cigar and talked trough closed teeth “The same way he did it, stealing, bribing, the works.”

His editor smile suddenly diminished “Johnny, listen, this is perfect, golden, but I must warn you, this won’t come cheap, not for you, I don’t know what could happen.”

“I do, arrest at maximum, doubt that fat oath has the balls to do anything else, the lard deserves to be exposed, look at all that, I don’t care what happens, just get it published”

“You are doing a good work John, I will pray for you”

“Thanks, a drink?”

Both journalist and editor celebrated that night, to a historical success, the exposition of a large corruption circle and a job well done.

For weeks that was how it went, Johnny was celebrated as a cultural hero, the politician was facing a large scandal, even threats of arrest were sent his way. John was already thinking of his next job, revealing secrets, searching for hidden meanings, that’s how he got into investigative journalism, it was his passion.

John walked to a nearby café owned by his friend Nicole.

“A cappuccino, for a perfect week!”

“Right away Johnny dear.”

The coffee shop was quiet that day, only a few costumers, two men drinking coffee in a corner and an old lady drinking her tea.

Nicole sat in front of John with his coffee cup, her pretty smile indicating that she either had or was looking for gossip.

“So, small hero, what’s the next big news? Stopping a war before it happens, revealing a serial killer?”

“Nothing so big this time, been looking at a surgeon who overcharges his patients, he is also evading taxes.”

“To another success then, listen, why don’t you stay tonight? I will make a nice big dinner”

“That would be nice, in fact, could I bother you for a pie?”

“Sure!” – As Nicole went away to the kitchen, John found himself alone at the coffee shop, he decided to look to the street, all types of cars were on it.

A black car suddenly stopped in front of the café, like a business man car. He wondered if there was a story there when four men left, all armed. “Should’ve kept your mouth shut!” was the last words Johnny heard as the café exploded around him in fragments of glass and bullets, his cigar still lit as he hit the floor. It appears Nicole would have dinner alone, again.
