“No!” Zara screamed as she watched Northwind pull the gun up to her head.
“You know what you have to do to save her.” Chloe’s monotone voice announced from Northwind’s mouth. “Are you going to let your partner die, Flame?” The words turned cruel as Chloe said her name through Northwind, before forcing North to wave her hand, taking down her uniform and revealing Ellery underneath.
She did. Zara had to reveal herself to Chloe. She shouldn’t, she knew, it would only put everyone else in more danger, but she also couldn’t see Ellery die, especially if it was her own fault.
“Having trouble deciding? If you need more incentive, I have it.” After Chloe finished. Zara watched as Granite and Pacific, Beckett and Kaiman walked out from the shadows, also with guns pointing towards each other.
Zara couldn’t kill them all. As important as it was to keep her identity a secret for the sake of her friends and family, her friends were already put in danger. And only she could save them.
She sighed, waving her hand around her and extinguishing the flames, revealing Zara underneath the Flame costume.
“Wow,” Chloe said through Beckett as the three lowered their guns. “I should’ve known.
“Now let them go, Chloe.” Zara pleaded, desperation leaking into her voice.
“We’ll, I would, but they’re such useful puppets, and, I need them.”
“Chloe, you-“
“Don’t call me that, Zara. No one can know my name, and only you do, so I hope you understand why I have to do this.”
Beckett’s hand extended, and the concrete under Zara’s feet began to shake. As she tried to duck away, Kaiman brought the rain towards her, keeping her in place, and keeping her from using her powers. The ground collapsed, and Zara grabbed on to a piece of rebar that was hidden under the concrete.
“Please, don’t do this Chloe. You know me. I’m only trying to help you.”
“Well,” Chloe said through Ellery. “I don’t need your help.” She sent a burst of wind towards Zara, causing her to fall through the thirteen other layers of the building.
Some say that before you’re about to die, your life flashes through your mind, but for Zara, it was pretty quick. She landed on her back, and the world went dark.
