Number 216 Chapter 9

Chapter 9

*216’s POV

I made it to the city fairly fast. It was loud and bright, and filled with so much noise. Nothing like the island at all. I put my raft up against some rocks and made my way up the hill. It wasn't the safest thing to be doing while carrying another life but it was the only way into the city.

I had made it to the top of the hill and suddenly the world around me started spinning. Before I knew it, there was nothing but darkness.

I woke up in a clinic of some sort with a strange woman beside me, and an IV in my arm. The room was white and so bright and freezing cold.

“Look who’s finally awake.” She said to me, “You gave us quite the scare.”

“Who are you? Where am I?”

“You are at the woman’s clinic. You collapsed on the side of the road. I brought you here, my name is Rhonda. Who are you?”

“I’m 2… I’d rather not say, if you don’t mind. I don’t exactly know you.”

“It’s fine, I won’t push.”

“Am I okay? How is my baby?”

“You were dehydrated, something fierce. The doctor should be in shortly to check on the baby.”

“Why did you stay with me?”

“I needed to make sure you were okay.”

“Thank you.”

The Doctor entered the room then and adjusted the bed so that I would lay flat. He brought over a monitor to the bed and sat next to me.

“Are you ready to check on your baby?” He asked me.

“More than you know.” I replied.

He put this cold blue gel on my stomach and started at the screen while moving this wond like thing around my belly, pressing a bunch of buttons creating stills on the screen. He was on my stomach for quite some time before he said anything until finally, “Who told you you were having a baby, as in one?”

“Noone has told me anything, that's why I was coming into the city to check on the baby… I haven’t seen it yet and needed to know it was okay.”

“Oh, alright. Do you know how far along you are?”

“If I had to guess I would say like six months maybe.”

“That's a good guess. You’re measuring a little over 26 weeks. About 26 weeks and 3 days.”

“Six and a half months. Wow.”

“But there is something else you should know.”

“Is my baby okay?”

“They are just fine.”

“They?”

“Yes dear. You're having twins.”

“As in two babies?”

“Yes.” He laughed. “Not what you were expecting?”

“I don’t know what I was expecting, or if I was even expecting anything.”

“Would you like to know what you’re having?”

“Can I?”

“Yes, Boy, Girl twins. One of each.”

I was in awe.I couldn’t believe it. Two babies. He let me hear each of their heartbeats and gave me photos that I could bring back with me. Then it hit me, how long was I out for? I had to get back to 13 before my day was up and he came looking for me. I couldn’t get separated from him not now.

“How long have I been here?” I asked Rhonda.

“About twelve and a half hours.” She replied.

“Good, I still have time.” I looked to the Doctor, “Can I go?”

“Everything looks good, just take it easy, drink lots of water.”

I got up and thanked Rhonda and the Doctor for all of their help and headed for the door. The great thing about the city is health care is free and it's for everyone. So I didn’t even have to stick around filling out a million papers.

“Hey!” Rhonda shouted behind me, “If you ever need anything or any help give me a call.” She handed me a paper with her number on it.

“Thanks.” I walked out. That’s when I saw it just ahead of me a spinning drone with a picture of my face and 13’s rotating around in a circle with my name and his hanging underneath it. I needed to get out of here and fast.

I put my face down and made my way back to the hill I climbed when I arrived here. I grabbed the raft and made it back to the island before anyone noticed me, or had the chance to recognize my face from the drones.

*13’s POV

After what seemed like forever I finally saw her floating back to me. My racing thoughts finally calmed down.

“Hey.” She walked over and kissed me, “I missed you.”

“I missed you more.” I said hugging her and kissing her head.

“What did you do while I was gone?” She asked me glancing over at the mess I made by the fire.

“I had to keep my hands moving to help my mind from going crazy. Come on, let me show you.” I said pulling her behind me leading her to the fire.

I had been busy while she was in the city. I was breaking branches off trees and shaving them down to be smooth and fastening them into a little bed that the baby could sleep in. I didn't finish it yet, but I was too excited to show her, I couldn’t wait.

“Close your eyes.” I said turning around in front of her to block her view. She did and I brought her in front of the bed I made. I had gotten really good at building things with my hands during our time here on the island. “You can open them now.”

She smiled and tears started flowing down her face. “It’s beautiful.”

“It’s not quite finished. But it will be done very soon.”

“Can I just make one little request?” She said looking up at me.

“Anything.”

“I’m going to need you to make another.”
