COMPETITION PROMPT

Blood coated his trembling fingers. He looked me in the eyes. “You made me do this.” His breathing came out in ragged spurts. “Why?”

Sarah Belmont

“Sarah Belmont, you have been charged with the murder of Andrew Belmont . How do you plead ?” “I didn’t murder him! I plead not guilty before you!” “ There’s no denying it we have our witness and you shall be tried as we see fit. Any last words.” “Yes. But I request to speak them before this said witness.” “Very well then, bring in the witness.” ……………TWO DAYS EARLIER……………… “I don’t think it’s a good idea to go out after dark. What if they catch us. “ “Sarah don’t be such a scaredy cat. How else are we going to practice our gifts if we don’t want anyone else to know about it. It has to be at night when everyone is sleeping. Besides we’ll be in the woods where no one dare goes after dark. “ “I’m not scared. I just don’t want to get caught, you know what they’ll do to us if they find us out after dark and if they learn what we are. “ “Trust me they won’t. And even if they do catch us, we can handle ourselves. “ That’s what I’m worried about, Sarah thought to herself. She really isn’t much of a rule breaker when it comes to the village rules, but she really did want to practice her gift before it was out of her control. It was well past after sundown when Sarah anxiously waited for the rest of her family to go to bed. She made sure to be extra quiet as she gathered her things and crawled out the back window. She slowly made her way to the woods, making sure to crouch real low between each home. Upon entering the woods Sarah took one look back towards her small village and hoped that no one saw her. She didn’t fear the darkness of the woods like most did. She embraced it with open arms, and the further she entered its embrace, the more the dark of the night consumed her. She kept walking further in and gave a little whistle to signal her arrival. She let her ears lead the way. “What took you So long Sarah? I feel like I’ve been waiting centuries.” “Sorry. My parents didn’t go to bed till late, and I had to wait till the last flicker of light from the candles went out.” “Well I’ve already been practicing. And I must say my gift has gotten a lot stronger than the last time. Go ahead and try yours.” Sarah knew her gift wasn’t as powerful, but she was still strong enough to hold her own. Sarah began to twirl her hands in a slow moving way that resembled a dance between her fingers and the wind. From this dance a spark grew from her hands and emitted a light so bright it casted a gleam in her eyes. “I told you Sarah! I knew you could be just as good as I am. It doesn’t matter that your a girl. Your gift is just as strong as mine.” Just then the snapping of a twig can be heard just behind them. “What was that?”, Sarah whispered. “Who’s out there?”, John yelled out to the nothingness of the darkness. Without waiting for a reply John ran towards the sound in search of who or what made that sound leaving Sarah behind in the dark. It all happened so fast. All Sarah remembers was the bright light that bursted through the woods and the screaming cry of a little boy. By the time she reached John, it was too late. He had used his gift for evil and killed her little brother, who had just so happen to see Sarah sneaking into the woods and curiously followed after. He had seen them using their gift, therefore according to John he had to be taken care of in order to keep their secret. Her little brother’s scream was loud enough to wake several people from the village. They ran toward the woods, torches in hands to light their way through the darkness. Sarah stood there dead silent. Shocked and frightened from seeing her dead brother. So many emotions running through her head, slowly fueling the dangerous power within her. She could see John’s mouth moving but couldn’t quite make out the words. Her shock and sadness quickly turned to anger, forcing her to shut anything else out. Sarah didn’t notice the small glowing torches in the distance getting bigger as they approached them closer and closer. She couldn’t hear the shouting from those holding the torches. And she most certainly didn’t hear what looked like John was screaming at her. She just knew she had to use her gift against him, to avenge her innocent little brother. She began to twirl her hands in the forbidden dance of her gift and steadied her aim towards John, when then she felt the grasp of two large hands holding her back forcing her to regain consciousness. Sarah then looked at John. Blood coated his trembling fingers. He looked her in the eyes. “You made me do this.” His breathing came out in ragged spurts. “Why? Sarah why would use your power to make me kill your brother? She made me do it! She’s clearly a witch! You saw the power she holds! She was going to use it to hurt me !”, John shouted towards the crowd. “Witch! Witch ! She’s a witch!,” the angry mob yelled. Sarah pleaded with them, “I didn’t do it! Please! I didn’t do it! He killed my brother with his power! He’s a witch too!”, Sarah screamed as they dragged her way. “There’s no such thing as a male witch.”, the head of the council laughed as he tightened his grip on her. “You’ll be dealt with much like all the other witches we’ve captured!” ………..……………..PRESENT……………………….. “Bring out the witness, Mr. John Billing!” Sarah could feel her blood boiling as he entered her sight. She wanted no more than to make him feel pain. Not only did he murder her brother and put the blame on her, but he forced her to expose what she is in order to protect himself. She knew what she needed to say to him. “Sarah Belmont, choose your last words wisely.” “I Sarah Belmont stand here before you in hopes that you will bear witness to the curse that will be bestowed upon all of you and your families for years to come! Especially you John. Don’t you worry, I found a way so that you’ll feel my wrath every time you use your power!” “Enough! Sarah Belmont you here have been found guilty for the murder of your brother and for being a witch ! Light the flame ! “ Little did the people of the village know, Sarah Belmont had placed a spell on herself. So that as soon as those flames reached her bones, her curse on the village would be set in place to forever haunt them and their families for eternity. Never to be broken. And as for that dirty John Billing. Let’s just say anytime he even dares to attempt to use his power, he feels the intense burning flames of Sarah’s wrath.
