STORY STARTER

In a world where the ocean is considered a terrifying, prohibited place, describe your character’s first experience of going in the sea.

Why do they have to, and how do they feel about it?

Fishing

I look at the Goliath, blue and vast and flat as the eye can see.

I stand on the boat, feel it wobble minutely and look down, I can see to the bottom of the sea here.

A shark- No, it has to be a whale- it’s at least a foot long- swims up to the boat and I can’t help but scream. The boat pushes away from the shore - leaving me stranded in the midst of this bluey-green. I scream again.

The fishermen, heroic, battle hardened warriors, talk idly in this foreign tongue that sounds like English but can’t be, it’s too… Something.

“Seh et beg un?” One says to the other, pointing at the birds in the sky- they’re massive! And those beaks look like they could drive through steel.

“Bledy ell them seagells er fet thes yer.” The other exclaims.

And that’s when they start to pull on the ropey things- nets I remind myself- and tangled up in it is one of those whales, this one’s a little smaller than the one I saw earlier, but only the little.

It writhes on the floor of the boat- What if it tips us over? Or makes the boat sink?

“Fecken smell teday, whe’s the preper fesh?” A fisherman says as he shakes the ropes and the massive whale thing falls back into the sea. I breathe a silent sigh of relief.
