POEM STARTER
Write a poem about the heart, focusing on its physicality and actions.
Avoid the kind of metaphors and language which are normally associated with the heart's emotional connection.
you
oh, when I look at you
how my heart starts beating faster
it’s funny how I don’t notice the quiet thump
until you’re by my side
and it’s louder and beats harder
than any other ordinary day
it’s always there
but goes unnoticed
but oh, when you’re close to me
at this rate,
you could probably hear it from there
sitting there,
oh so close
you look at me, talk to me
my brain stops
so does the beat of my heart
I forget about it
about everything else
the only thing on my mind
and in my heart
is you
you
you
you
oh, and when you talk to me
I’m never quite sure what I say
I don’t remember if I’ve ever said anything at all
it all goes black
and there’s just you
your face
your voice
I don’t think I even pay attention
to the words you said
too lost in those beautiful eyes
to think about anything else
I don’t know why
but everything else is irrelevant around you
oh and then you look away
or I do, too shy to maintain eye contact
and you stop talking to me
start talking to her or him or no one
you get up and leave the room
that’s when time starts again
I sit there, wondering, what just happened?
what did I say?
what did you even say?
the only thing I ever remember
is how I felt
how you made me feel
how my heart beat louder and louder
and then it went away
how my brain stopped working
how my worries fluttered away
the only thing on my mind was
you
and as I think about this
I notice my heartbeat again
faster
harder
like I’m falling
scared I’ll never land
hoping I do, and soon
hoping I land in your arms
see your face
lock eyes
and everything stops all over again
my heart
my mind
there’s nothing else
just me with
you
