POEM STARTER

Write a poem about the heart, focusing on its physicality and actions.

Avoid the kind of metaphors and language which are normally associated with the heart's emotional connection.

Biology Lesson.

Cut into me with a scalpel of smiles,

Learn something from my trials.

Point out the sections where I felt strain,

At least knowledge can be gained.

Strings of fat pull taunt as gloves explore,

Some students poke and laugh at the gore.

My ventricles exposed to the flickering light,

Some faces go green at the sight.

Diligent notes are kept about every artery and vein,

Penned in red as some clumsy boy makes the floor stain.

The teacher explains with patience to eager ears,

Forgetting for a moment the same heart on the table was once beating like hers.

(Loosely based on a biology lesson at school where we dissected a cow heart 💛)
