The Day You’ve Been Waiting For

You cross your fingers as you unlock the mail box on the first floor of your apartment building. Today is day number sixty three of this ritual, but this is something you have been waiting a life time for. Since the very first time you wrote your name. Of course year parents gave you a complicated name so it took several more months than some of your peers to learn how to spell it correctly. Back then when you asked your parents to call you_ Ryan _they laughed, said your name was pretty and that you would get used to it. Your mother told you that she hadn't liked her name when she was your age either, but now, she loved having a unique name.

When you slide out the small stack of mail and see an envelope from the Government of Canada, you squeal then quickly look around to make sure no one heard. You dash to the elevator and press the button for the tenth floor with more enthusiasm than you probably ever have.

Its the slowest ride ever up to your apartment with the envelope clutched to your chest. For a moment you consider tearing it open right there but think this is something you want to read alone in your apartment.

When you unlock the door Lucy is there to great you. She screams and winds her way between your feet flicking her tail as you my to untie your shoes. After a few failed attempts you give up and slump down onto the concrete floor of your apartment and lean up against the door.

Before you tear the envelope open you pause and take a deep breathe, this is the day you've been waiting for.
