Bittersweet

“I don’t want to go to bed, the person with no eyes is waiting for me in the closet!” Tony cried.

“For the last time Tony there is no one in your closet!” I screamed.

Our mom would be home any minute and my three year old brothers bedtime was an hour ago.

“Just to make you happy I will look in the closet ok?”

Tony nodded his lip quivering. I rolled my eyes and carried my exhausted brother up the stairs.

“Go lay in you bed and I’ll check your closet.”

Tony launched in bed and and took cover under the blanket. I rolled my eyes once again and opened the walk in closet.

“Tony look there’s nothing he-“

I stopped.

A grey toy ball rolled out of the dark closet. Tony whimpered under the covers. I watched the closet. Out of the shadows came a long skinny grey hand. Then nails looked as if they had been ripped off. The fingers were bloody red. The hand got closer and closer to my neck. I couldn’t say anything. The long fingers were jellyfish tentacles, the moved like there were swimming. The tip of a finger touched my neck and I screamed. I screamed in such a high pitch my ears rang. The hand climbed up my neck and over my mouth. I gasped. Tony was crying, still under the blanket.

A horrid face peaked out of the shadows. Years later I could never even describe the face. The hair was ratty and black. It’s eyes were absent as were the ears. The lips were white and cracked. The eye sockets were twice the size as normal. It smiled and tilted its head at me. I looked at its back, there were wings.

Tony stopped crying and whispered, “Evelyn? Are you died?” He was still under the blanket.

The thing whispered to me, “Tell your brother to close his eyes and get over here!”

The voice was horse and terrifying. I called to Tony, “Tony can you please close your eyes and come over her?”

Tony squeezed his eyes shut and walked blindly over towards me. The persons other hand shot out and grabbed his neck. I screamed again.

It’s was silent after that. The person tilted their sunken face back and forth. This person looked and seemed more animal then human. The front door slam broke the silence. Mom was home. I sighed with relief and looked at the person. A grin sprouted on their face. I waited for my mom in to come in the room. I heard footsteps up the wooden stairs and into this room. They stopped behind me.

I don’t know what happened after that but they weren’t my mom. I think that someone knocked me and my brother out. We were driven to some underground dungeonish thing. I don’t know. My brother and I were kept in a tiny cell. One bed. that was it. Tony was sound asleep in that bed.

Lucky him.

The weeks went by fast. The same things happened every day.

Wake up.

Eat.

Bathroom.

Cell.

Eat.

Cell.

Bathroom.

Cell.

Sleep.

Over and over again. Nothing interesting happened. Until day 112. We saw other people. Normal people I mean.

It was in the middle of the night went a rock was chucked at my back. I was sleeping on the dirt like I had done the last four months. I sat up and looked outside the bars. Two normal men. With normal eyes. And wingless backs were standing outside. I stared. The taller man brought his finger to his lips to keep me quiet. Then pointed at my brother. Meanwhile the shorter bigger man worked on the lock. I obeyed and brought my little sleeping brother to the door. I let a tiny grin escape. I had a tiny hope for a tiny chance to escape.

When the door was finally opened I walked in between the two men. I didn’t dare speak though I wanted to make sure we were getting out of here.

We walked for about two hours and finally walked up a ladder. A latch at the top was opened and….oh my gosh! It was the sun. The warm magical rays strolled along my face. My eyes started tearing up. Tony woke up and asked where we were. I shushed him. We didn’t want to get caught again.

It was too late.

They heard us.

“RUN!!!” the tall man screamed. He grabbed Tony and launched towards the dark wood. I ran behind him. Barely keeping up. I knew i shouldn’t have looked behind me but I did. They were chasing us. Their wings opened and they were gaining fast. I stopped. Not literally but mentally. They couldn’t see us. They were only on our trail because they could hear us. I jumped towards the tall man carrying my brother and told him to stop. The short man stopped too. The people were getting closer but I had an idea.

I grabbed a small rock and threw it in some bushes about ten feet away. The people darted towards it. Passing us. We stayed silent. They were gone.

Walking along the road we finally started talking. I told them my name and story. The big man shared his and the tall man started talking.

He looked at me. “Lillian, I’m your dad.”

I stopped walking. Everyone did. I broke down in tears and wrapped my arms around my long lost father.

“I missed you. I thought I’d never see you again. I love you so much.”
