hey dad,

i found letters to you in one of my mother's old boxes of memories in the attic. they are addressed "my love" in her lovely slanted script. she'd have a go at me if she found out i saw them, i'm sure, but i was just so excited to read about your love story. they were tied in a stack with a pretty ribbon, & some of the letters had red lipstick kiss marks on them. i promise i was going to read only the top letter and put the rest back, but the words were ever so romantic! i brought the bowtied stack with me to my room.

as i read more of these letters i'm getting the sneaking suspicion that mama didn't write them for you. did you know about them? who are they for? if not for you, why keep them? was it her first love?
