Even if you don't know how the chapter will flow yet, you can begin building these ideas.
The Blood Gem: Details
Setting:
The main setting of the story is the vampire boarding school, Batwing High. It was not always a high school, it was originally the castle of the vampire royalty. It was transformed into a school in 1872 by Sir Forest Batwing, who is still the school principal to this day. The building is very tall and it’s made from a very dark stone. Since the building is hundreds of years old, the stones are cracked in various places and there are vines growing in that space. Some parts of the school are newer, and they’re made from a shinier, white stone, for example the students’ dorms or the classrooms, more and more were added to the building over the years as the number of students increased. In January, the start of the vampire school year, each student must take a test their level of strength. The levels go from 1 to 4, classes and dorms are assigned according to level. The school has a few secret passages that the students and most of the teachers don’t know exist. One of them is in the library, and the entrance is hidden behind a bookshelf. These passages are far from the only secret the school is hiding. Being a student at Batwing High is not always easy, the classes are tough, the teachers are very strict, and not everyone is who they say they are.
Characters:
1) Layne - the protagonist, she’s a first year at Batwing High and doesn’t have many friends. She is trying to find out why her necklace is so important to the school’s mysterious attackers and where it came from.
2) Jake - Layne’s friend, he’s also unpopular but that’s why he gets along so well with Layne. He wants to help her solve the mystery. Layne has a bit of a crush on him.
3) Lila, Sadie and Cora - the popular girls and Layne’s roommates, they don’t like her because she doesn’t fit in but doesn’t care, and because they think someone who was raised by humans doesn’t belong at Batwing High.
4) Jade - Layne’s roommate, nicer to her than the others but very mysterious and almost never talks.
5) Leah - sort of Layne’s friend, one year older than Layne. Wants to help her because her girlfriend, Jenny went missing a few months ago and had a necklace that looked exactly like Layne’s.
6) Brad, Tristin, Erik and Chase - Jake’s roommates. Chase is Lila’s boyfriend. Erik secretly likes a guy named John, but his friends don’t want him seeing John because he’s from a lower level.
7) Mr. and Mrs. Dahlia - Layne’s human parents, they found her in the Wishing Stream. They miss her when she goes to Batwing High, but they support her and want to help in any way they can.
8) Mrs. Summer - one of Layne’s teachers, very strict.
9) Mr. Cedar - another teacher.
10) Mr. Batwing - the principal and founder of the school.
Opening Chapter:
The story starts fourteen years before the main action of the book. It begins at the magical river; the Wishing Stream, where Mr. and Mrs. Dahlia visiting late at night. While they were there, they found Layne as a baby, a gift sent to them by the magic of the stream. Layne was found with a special necklace that also had its own magic.
This sounds like a very interesting plot for a book! May I ask what sort of audience this would be catered to? Like will it be fantastical and tame for children/preteens, or will it have more brutal moments for like teens/young adults (or both/neither!).
Also, do the vampires have powers that they gain, or perhaps even special privileges at higher levels? Also my mind always goes to Harry Potter when thinking of magic school, would this be a book for someone who likes that series?
I have a lot of questions because I find this to be very interesting and I love vampires 😭
Thank you for the like and the comment! I’ll try my best to answer all your questions.
1) My target audience is mostly teens, ages 12-16, but who are looking to read something more mature.
2) A lot of the characters do have special powers. For example, Jake can fly, and Lila can read minds. It is common for vampires to have one special power, but some at a high level, or someone very old could have more.
3) Higher levels don’t have special privileges in the strictest sense, but it does make it much easier to gain respect and popularity.
4) Yes, this would be something I would recommend to fans of Harry Potter.
I hope this helps, if you have more questions, ask me anytime! Have a nice day!
