Eye’d Seen Too Much
Daddy comes home, he has a smell.
Daddy beats momma across the face.
She cries out, beggin’ him.
I watch with my own two eyes.
Momma is all bruised.
She says it’s just a silly game.
I know better, though.
Momma is on the kitchen floor.
Daddy is bloody, he tells me to go on.
Daddy is yellin’, he’s throwin’ bottles.
I watch him with my own two eyes.
Sister is on her bed.
She’s hurt real bad.
I know where she’s hurt.
Daddy did it.
I know he did.
Because I saw it.
With my own two eyes.
A officer takes me from my house.
A woman packs me my bags.
I go to school, I beat a boy.
I’m on the front lines.
My friend is gone away.
He’s been shot, I know where.
I see it with my own two eyes.
A man with a knife.
A gag in my mouth.
My right eye in his hand.
I know because I see it.
With my own last eye.
My hands, around his throat.
His eyes bulge under the blood.
I’m a mean man- a bad man.
My wife, she’s on the bed.
She’s cryin’ at what I’m about to do.
She’s hurt and I know where.
I see it with my own eye.
The jail has white walls.
The iron bars bitin’ my hands.
I kill a man with a sharpened shard.
A woman says it’s because of history.
I told her it’s the way I am.
She showed me I was wrong.
I saw it with my own eye.
I have a daughter now.
She looks like the woman.
And I saw my baby…
I’m nothin’ like my daddy.
I’ve changed my ways.
I see it with my own eye.
