COMPETITION PROMPT

Blood stained her face, loved ones looking at her warily as she stared back at them menacingly. “This is who I am, and there is no need to be afraid.” she said, stepping forward.

Rumor’s End

“Wendy, I think this has gone too far,” Raquel  said, wiping the blood from her sister’s face. “You’ve got your message across, you can stop now.” “They had it coming, you know that,” Wendy argued, slapping Raquel’s hand away. “And there are many more fates to be sealed by my hand.” “Raquel’s right, Wendy,” Margo said, crossing her arms. “Quinn, Harper and Madison all got what they deserved, but this is just getting out of hand.” “Don’t encourage her, this was never okay!” Raquel yelled, turning to Margo. “I  never wanted anything to do with this in the first place!” “It was for the greater good, Raquel,” Wendy said, wrapping her arm around her frantic sister. “Quinn, Harper and Madison, the girls who ruled the school with an iron fist, are six feet under, and everyone has us to thank for that.” “I don’t want credit for murdering a couple of spoiled brats over a petty rumor!” Raquel yelped, pushing Wendy away. “And now only heaven knows who you’ve gone and killed this time!” “Trent Rannells and Evan Woods,” Wendy answered innocently, walking over to the sink and washing the blood off her hands. “Their heads were getting too big for their own good, so I decided to take the weight off their shoulders.” Raquel threw up in her mouth and Margo just stared at her psychotic sister blankly. “That’s it,” Margo said, taking a knife off the table and pointing it at Wendy. “This is not a game anymore, Wendy.” “That’s not what you said when we took out the biggest demon trio in school,” Wendy argued, putting her hands up. “If I'm being honest, I think you enjoyed their end a little too much.” Margo lunged at Wendy, knife raised in the air, ready to stab its first victim. Before the blade met Wendy’s skin, Raquel grabbed Margo’s arm, trying to calm the heated situation. “No one else is dying by our hands!” Raquel yelled, struggling to keep hold of Margo’s wrist. “You guys are family, I can’t lose you, not like this!” Before Raquel could react, Wendy pulled a bloody knife out of her pocket and thrust it into Margo’s abdomen, withdrawing it instantly. “No!” Raquel yelled, feeling Margo’s pulse start to fade as she fell to the floor. Blood started to stream out at a rapid pace, Raquel unable to stop it no matter the pressure applied to the open wound. “Margo, don’t go, don’t go,” Raquel pleaded, pressing down harder in hopes to stop the flow of blood. “Please don’t go!” Margo looked up at Raquel, her breath heavy as a tear rolled down her cheek from the pain. “How could you, she’s our sister!” Raquel yelled, turning to Wendy, who only stared at the fresh blood on the knife, a menacing look burning straight through it. “Call 911, you can’t just let her die!” “No,” Wendy said, looking at Margo who laid helplessly on the ground. “She stopped being my sister the moment she threatened to betray me.” Raquel turned back to her dying sister, taking her hands away for just a second to pull out her phone and began to dial the three simple numbers that could save her sister’s life. Wendy, in an act of desperation, kicked the phone out of Raquel’s hand. It hit the wall and shattered, lying useless on the ground. “The police can’t know about this,” Wendy said, her voice now shaking with terror as if her sanity had finally come back and knocked some sense into her. “It’ll be our little secret.” Raquel looked back at Margo, who now lay lifeless on the ground. It was then when Raquel realized there was no real time to save her sister. “Please Raquel, don’t tell anyone!” Wendy pleaded, falling to her knees in despair. “I-I can’t go to jail, I just can’t!” All Raquel could do was nod, feeling bound to that promise. After all, Wendy was the one with the knife.  *** The next day at school, Raquel had to use all her might not to act weird around Wendy, as if the previous night never happened. It was even harder to hear all the rumors about Trent and Evan. “Did you hear? Trent and Evan went missing last night.” “Oh my god! Do you think that killer got them? You know, the one that killed Quinn, Harper and Madison.” “I think so. Also, that kid Margo didn’t show up today.” “Oh, that freaky art kid?” “Yeah, I heard she conspired with the murderer, but couldn’t take it, so she offed herself.” “OMG! Are you serious?” Raquel ran down the hall, into the girl’s bathroom and dodged into an empty stall, locking herself inside. She sat on the toilet seat, all kinds of thoughts racing through her mind. Horrible thoughts. This was all Wendy’s fault. This all would’ve never happened if she didn’t let some petty rumor get the best of her. Raquel’s blood boiled, furious that someone she called her sister was so willing to drag them down together.  Raquel broke into a nervous sweat, her heart pounding against her chest ferociously as if it were attempting a jailbreak. Just then, Raquel heard the sound of two girls walking into the bathroom. She covered her mouth, hoping not to be noticed. “Rumors are what ruin a person’s life, Casey,” Raquel heard the unmistakable voice of Wendy, who shoved the other girl into the door of the stall Raquel had been hiding in. “And these rumors will only hurt you in the end.” “What the heck are you talking about!? I don’t even know who you are!” Casey argued, pushing Wendy out of the way in an attempt to escape the girl’s bathroom. “You can’t leave yet,” Wendy said, grabbing Casey’s wrist. “You have to pay for the rumors you started. They hurt people.” Wendy grabbed Casey by wrist, shoving her into the empty stall next to Raquel, her heart racing uncontrollably for all she could do was listen to the horrible scene that followed. “Wait, what are you doing!?” Casey yelled, trying to resist Wendy’s grip. “Let go of me, you psychopath!” Seconds later, Raquel heard the sound of water splashing, the sound of gurgling, the sound of struggling and the sound of muffled screams. And those sounds were nothing compared to the piercing silence that followed. This was the breaking point for Raquel. She stood up with new found confidence and opened the stall door to see Wendy about to leave. “What have you done?” Raquel asked, her fists curled tightly into balls that were ready to punch Wendy in the face repeatedly. “Casey had it coming, that prissy new cheer captain was getting on my nerves.” Wendy said, turning to face Raquel. “At least no one will have to deal with her anymore.” “You are insane!” Raquel yelled, slapping Wendy across the face. “No amount of revenge is going to make you happy. This isn’t a game; people are dying!” “And for good reason!” Wendy yelled, walking towards Raquel, her eyes glowing with a fire that Raquel had seen before. It wasn’t until now she realized this fire meant danger, and every dangerous fire needed to be extinguished. “Quinn, Harper and Madison told everyone about our parents being jailed for fraud. Doesn’t someone like that deserve to be dead? We’re doing people a service!” “This isn’t doing anyone a service,” Raquel argued, grabbing Wendy by the hair and shoving her into the nearest stall. “You killed our sister, you killed my sister. What you’ve done hasn’t been a service, but this will be.”  Raquel forced Wendy’s head into the toilet bowl. Wendy struggled against Raquel’s grasp, but she was too fueled by anger to let Wendy win this time. Her head submerged under water, Wendy gasped for air that no longer existed. It wasn’t long before Wendy was unconscious, and Raquel left her to drown. Raquel could feel the burden lifted from her shoulders like a boulder rolling off the side of a mountain.  “You!?” A shrill voice called from the other side from the bathroom, making Raquel turn on her heel. There stood a freshman, tugging on her shirt in fear. Before Raquel could say anything, the girl ran out of the bathroom and got a teacher to lock Raquel inside.  Police surrounded the school; students and staff members evacuated the building as officers swarmed the school to apprehend Raquel. They barged through the door of the girl’s bathroom and wrapped her wrists in silver. Raquel didn’t resist, she didn’t defend herself. There was no point. She deserved jail just as much as Wendy and Margo deserved death; she was an accomplice, afterall.
