Awaken

Lying on my back,

staring at mt eyelids

while I wait for light

to slip through the cracks.

“Wake up, wake up,”

a voice calls from the void.

Try as I might,

I can’t yet drink from the cup.

Still, sensation begins to flow

like a river on a rock -

slowly smoothing edges

the imperfections we all know.

Lifting my arms and feeling some restriction -

chains that hold me back

distorting my sense of feeling

and removing all personal vindications.

I try to sit up but alas

there is a strange weight in my chest

for my heart had turned to stone.

Well, I thought, at least it is no longer glass.

I chuckle to myself,

trying to grin through the madness.

My mind swirling like a storm,

my thoughts turn to lost wealth.

Not wealth of silver or gold

But of lost love and hope.

Both of which are now gone,

for they were improperly sold.

Come on, one last try,

I thought to myself.

As I begin to stand,

I hear a vocal outcry

“No No! Not that way!

Open your eyes for

you cannot succeed

lest you do not stray.”

“I’ve been awake this whole time!

Even without my sight,

my heart or my soul

I will be the light that shines.
