Shadows In The Snow

I live here I thought as I looked out to the ominous blue.

The arctic ice warms my heart and the chill in the air helps me breathe.

I can’t believe I live here in this paradise.

Of course it wasn’t by choice, not originally, but one can get used to the certain perks such an isolated place can offer.

No people talking your ear off and no children running around causing havoc.

I was sad at first, the endless nights kept me awake.

My only light the torch in my hand and even that isn’t reliable.

I felt lonely at first, but now I know I’m not alone.

I see them sometimes in the snow, shadowy figures that loom in the distance.

I thought at first they were penguins, but as vast as this continent is you don’t see many of those around these parts.

So I pondered and questioned and wondered what it could be. These figures in the distance.

And now I know.

I know now that we are not alone, at least I am not alone and those figures that watch me. With fascination or maybe pity, they visit me here at my prison.

I have done terrible things, and I acknowledge that. I’m here to do the time.

But even prisoners need visitors and I’m glad it’s them.

Those silent watchers in the cold, who give me company.

They move closer each day, and each time they do I see a little more.

They smile at me, their smiles contorted in an unnatural shape. Some might say it’s sinister, but I say it’s joy.

I am not alone, and when they get to me, I will be at peace.
