STORY STARTER

Submitted by Robin Marlowe

Write a story in which the protagonist starts to see cracks in their reality. Force the reader to ask: are they uncovering an illusion, or falling for a delusion?

If our senses can be fooled, then how do we know that our world is real?

now i have you

Uh- metaphorical twist on prompt… warning: SH.

“I never had friends, but now I have you,” I mumbled with a small smile, glancing up from beneath my eyelashes.

The girls grinned in response, Sadie throwing her pillow at me with a, “You always will,” and Danny laughing with a, “No matter what.”

They always finished each other’s sentences.

I wanted to be a part of that, and I guess I did what I wanted.

I look at the mirror, a cold, demon-looking woman staring back at me.

My eyes shift to my wrist, to the tattoo they gave me. It only took a month.

They left me. Acted like we were still friends.

I look at the tattoo again. __I never had friends, but now I have you.__

And their melodic, angelically demonic voices echo in my ears.

__You always will.

No matter what.__

And suddenly, I remember tattoos are just scars that tell a veiled story. You never know what’s really behind it.
