Hazy Days
‘Ellie! Come here, see this’ I shout.
I look back out to sea from the cliff edge as Ellie begins to walk towards me leaving the rest of the gang back at the picnic bench, enjoying there beers. The hum of laughter and good times can be heard behind me.
The sun is low and glistens on the water like gold glitter. It’s beautiful. It’s warm and hazy. I feel so relaxed after the day of surfing with friends. My hair still wet from the sea, keeping me cool.
I turn as I hear Ellie behind me.
‘What is it Sis?’
I grab her hand not giving her a chance to not accept. She sees the look in my eye, the playful sinister look. She’s known it since we were little. Her smile disappears. She knows trouble is coming.
I pull her closer to the edge of the cliff. She tries to stop me, but I’m stronger. I’m smaller and younger, but have always been stronger. She digs her feet into the floor and tries to lean back harder. But with a pull and a shove she goes tumbling off the cliff. Arms and legs flailing through the air like bicycle pedals out of control. There’s a moment of silence before she hits the water. She disappears out of sight leaving nothing but the splash of sea.
I laugh at the top of my voice before launching myself of the cliff edge to join her.
