‘Ellie! Come here, see this’ I shout. I look back out to sea from the cliff edge as Ellie begins to walk towards me leaving the rest of the gang back at the picnic bench, enjoying there beers. The hum of laughter and good times can be heard behind me.
The sun is low and glistens on the water like gold glitter. It’s beautiful. It’s warm and hazy. I feel so relaxed after the day of surfing with friends. My hair still wet from the sea, keeping me cool.
I turn as I hear Ellie behind me. ‘What is it Sis?’ I grab her hand not giving her a chance to not accept. She sees the look in my eye, the playful sinister look. She’s known it since we were little. Her smile disappears. She knows trouble is coming.
I pull her closer to the edge of the cliff. She tries to stop me, but I’m stronger. I’m smaller and younger, but have always been stronger. She digs her feet into the floor and tries to lean back harder. But with a pull and a shove she goes tumbling off the cliff. Arms and legs flailing through the air like bicycle pedals out of control. There’s a moment of silence before she hits the water. She disappears out of sight leaving nothing but the splash of sea.
I laugh at the top of my voice before launching myself of the cliff edge to join her.
I wake with a start and a huge intake of air. It’s cold and dark. I lift my head slightly. Where am I? I try to sit up but my hands are tied behind my back. Panic strikes me. I frantically wriggle and struggle desperately. I manage to slide up into a seated position. I’m in the back of an empty car. I slide across the seat and try to open the door. It’s locked. Shit. What is going on? My head is spinning. I feel groggy. I rapidly try to think back to the last thing I remember. I was with my friend Jasmine, having a girly catch up. I remember us at the bar, enjoying a bottle of Pinot. But nothing after that. Blank.
I breath rapidly, and can see the warmth of my breath in the cold air. It feels damp, and outside it’s hard to see through the fog. There’s the glow of some street lamps not far away. I’m scared. Petrified. I hear footsteps approaching the car. I freeze in fear. The foosteps stop and I wait in anticipation.
