They’re Not Soulmates
Her heart is almost full but
She feels only somewhat seen
Her humor is met with silence
His slights disguised as playful, are really mean
Common interests they enjoy but
His last apology was never
She’s always in the passenger seat
Tiptoeing around his temper
Argumentative by necessity
Her debate skills should win a prize
But she’s lonely during the day
Yearning to be looked at in the eyes
I watch my mom and I wonder
How I would cope if this were me?
Your life is not the place to settle
How’s she content to let this be?
I knew she wasn’t fully happy
So I’m surprised that I’m so sad
That after some wine today she admitted
That her soulmate’s not my dad
