18th Birthday Wishes
You started when you were 13,
Only a little mascara you said
And by the time you were 15, that little girl was dead
She turned into a beauty queen
Admired by all
And those she was the center of attention
She never felt she was worth it all
Soon mascara turned into getting your lashes done
And putting make-up on was no longer fun
You practice your smile
Before you left each day,
because little by little
You facade was breaking away
You’re friends weren’t real,
felt no love for your partner
But the connection were ideal
Helped you climb to the top of the social ladder
You pretend you’re happy,
How could you not be?
You’ve got a everything you want,
But do you really?
You go to bed each night
On a tear-stained pillow
And wake up each day,
unable to catch your breath
You say it’s fine,
It’s all in my mind
But it’s not truly in your head,
It’s an attack, one of panic
And suddenly you wonder
Why do you do it all?
Wake at 4:30, to make sure that you’ve cover it all?
The pimples and dark circles
The bruises on your knuckles?
You punch the back each night
As you body shakes with tears
Who will live my true self, you wonder?
And then you make a decision, right then and there
That you don’t have anything to fear
Anything to cover
You put down the blush and look in the mirror,
And for the first time in forever,
You finally see her.
The little girl you lost when you were 13,
Is now living inside your mind,
On the day that you turn 18
