When I was 5, you told me you loved me to the moon and back

I joked that the moon was to far away, and went back to play

When I was 12, I went on a field trip, and you sent me a snack

It had a note that said, “love you, to the moon and back”, and I threw it away

When I was 19, I packed to move out, and before you dropped me off, you said, “remember, I will always love you to the moon and back”

I mumbled it back, before leaving

When I was 23, I got a call, that you weren’t going to live

I didn’t make it back on time, and cried by your grave

When I was 29, I followed my dream, and became an astronaut

When I stepped foot onto the lunar ground, I closed my eyes and said “I will always love you to the moon and back”

Because I would travel any distance to say it, one last time.
