POEM STARTER

Write a blank verse poem on a topic that's important to you.

Blank verse poetry doesn't rhyme, but has a very strict structure which builds a melody through rhythm. (One way to create this is to structure each line with the same amount of syllables, and the same syllabic stresses, like you might if you were writing the verses of a song.)

Dreamers

I am a dreamer.

Maybe that’s a curse.

I want to have ambition,

I want to have passion,

I want to dream.

But maybe that’s wrong for me.

Because passion doesn’t equate talent.

If you have a dream, do you follow it to no end?

What if it doesn’t work out?

Then what?

I crave to want;

I crave to lie below the stars at night and just imagine all the places I’m going to go and all the things I’m going to do.

But that isn’t what the world tells me.

The world tells me that I should follow my dreams,

but I can read between the lines:

It’s a lie.

All of it.

Don’t follow your dreams;

it’s only something you can do if your dreams align with what is “right” for you.

So maybe some dreams are meant to be kept in boxes.

Maybe some people shouldn’t be dreamers.

Maybe some should stay put and follow the path the world has already set out for you,

instead of paving your own.

Maybe my dream is Pandora’s box.

Maybe I should lock it away and throw away the key,

but then, I’ll never stop wondering.

I’ll never stop wondering what could’ve been, what might’ve been, what should’ve been.
