High Tide

It’s been many years since we each left this place.

We parted with screams, tear tracks staining my face.

You told me if I ever wanted to find you, you’d be around.

I looked everywhere, I scoured our town;

I checked each bar, each street, each park

I walked the bright days, I walked the deep dark.

I walked to the beach where we first shared a kiss, how could I have known it would end up like this?

The ocean waves crashing, the sound struck me deaf. The color seemed to drain, only shades of gray left.

Footprints like arrows lead straight to the shore. You’re far out in the water, you could hear me no more.

I wade in behind you, screaming your name.

“What, do you think this is some kind of game?”

The water gets deeper, the sand getting cold

“Come on, come back now. This chasing grows old!”

The current tosses and drags me, increasingly resistant, the closer I swim, the more you grow distant.

You peer over your shoulder, toss a smile and a wave

You then disappear, I have entered your grave

I am too far from the shallows, I am well beyond help.

While chasing your ghost, I became one myself.
