The No-Shoe Witch

The train bounced up and down as we sped through the countryside. We passed tall, green grasses with sheep and horses roaming about. It was peaceful, very quiet. The train itself wasn’t very full, only a few people. A goblin sat to my far left, a family of dwarves to my right. Across from me sat a witch.

She had long, dark hair pinned up and flowy dark robes. What was odd, she wasn’t wearing shoes! Instead she jsut wore a pair of striped socks. I wondered if she did any magic, if she could help me at all.

“Excuse me, miss? Can you do magic?” I asked in my small voice. I was only eight, so I was pretty squeaky.

She smiled down at me. Her nose was very large. “Oh, not anymore. The last time, I tried I had to live upside down for a week!”

“A week!” I gasped. That was a really long time.

“Yes!” She agreed.

“Is that why your not wearing any shoes?”

She laughed. “No, it just helps me think.”

I gave her a puzzled look. “Huh. Do you think It’s help me think?”

“Maybe. Who knows?”

Looking down at my own feet, I decided to try. I slipped off my boots (which had sparkles and stickers, cool, I know), revealing my own mismatched socks. One was green, the other orange and striped. I closed my eyes, foucusing very hard on thinking. It didn’t work, instead a song I had heard earlier began to play in my head.

I giggled. “It’s not working!”

The witch laughed. “That’s alright. Get some practice, and it might work soon!”

I nodded, grinning. “Maybe.”

That night, I sat down on the ground, took off my shoes, and thought. It still didn’t work very well, but it was fun to do anyway.
