The Slip
No one ever did find out what happened to Penny when she disappeared from the jetty last summer. Freida, the local baker swore on her Mother’s grave that she was pushed by her husband after an argument got out of hand. Penny never mentioned a bad word about ‘her’ Gus. They were often seen walking around town hand in hand and laughing together.
Trevor, the librarian had a different spin on the happenings. He knew that she suffered from depression after many conversations he shared with the woman in the store so he was not surprised when a customer whispered to him across the counter shortly after the incident, that someone saw her jump off the edge of the pier as if she willed it to happen. Her body was never found and after six weeks of thorough investigation into her disappearance, the search for Penny Rothshaw was called off.
The last news headline printed a year later read “33 year old woman still remains missing - last seen at Torgum Jetty at 5:45pm on 23 February 2010”
Tom knew what happened. He was there at the jetty on the night of 23 February. If he let the truth slip now, he would not live to see another day. No one would have believed him had he gone to the police that night. No one except Penny.
And now, Penny was dead.
