WRITING OBSTACLE
Submitted by Maranda Quinn
Show a powerful emotion – love, grief, rage - in a quiet, everyday moment.
Instead of writing a dramatic and drawn out scene, think about how subtle actions and sensory details can carry the weight of the feeling.
Carrots & Broccoli
I didn’t notice it at first.
It seemed to happen almost at random, a constant that we did, unaware, or aware but did it for pure pleasure.
I hated broccoli, the sweet but bitter taste, the texture, and the crunchiest of it was just never my style, but he loved it, loved the different way he could cook, or broil it, but he couldn’t convince me to give it a chance, so he would take it, always when I offered, like it was a little treat for him, whenever I placed it on his plate.
I loved carrots, the smooth crunchy texture, which is ironic since it’s almost like broccoli, but carrots are heavenly, he doesn’t like Carrots of course, constantly giving me his when the server gives him any, and I don't complain.
Were both so unaware that we do it, almost like it’s a habit that we don’t notice but do often, he would place carrots on my plate, as I would place broccoli on his, almost on instinct, not a thought in our head but of the meal in front of us.
The server places his meal in front of him, garlic noodles, with a side of vegetables, some steamed broccoli, and carrots, on instinct he poked the carrot, with his fork, placing it on my plate.
I smiled softly at that, he looked up catching my expression, raising his eyebrows.
“Hmm. what's got you smiling” he says, chuckling, I shake my head, smiling to myself.
“It’s nothing,” I respond, he looks at me for a second, shaking his head, going back to his food.
