WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a short story which repeats the same line in every paragraph.

By repeating a line or phrase, meanings can be twisted as the story goes on.

Something Isn’t Right

Something isn’t right.

My caramel cappuccino lacks the sweetness it usually has; it’s bitter and dull. I frown with disappointment, but take another sip despite it. I need the caffeine to get through today, considering I have a project to complete tonight.

Something isn’t right.

I enter the library and not a soul is in here. I scan the front desk for any signs of a worker, and find none. Unsure, I check the hours and confirm the library is open. Maybe no one has a project to complete as I do. I sit down and begin my work.

Something isn’t right.

The silence in the library is too silent. There are no sounds of flipping pages or clicking pens. It’s just me and my quiet breathing. Hesitantly, I get up and scan for any sight of a single soul…I find a tall man smirking and staring down at me.

Something isn’t right.

I try to turn to escape from the harsh eye contact of this strange man, but he walks closer, trapping me.

“You should’ve known it wasn’t safe from the first sip of your coffee,” the man mutters.

I shake my head in confusion.

“What horrible instincts you have,” he says, stalking closer.

I shake with uncontrollable fear as darkness wraps around me and eats me alive.
