STORY STARTER

Her hands trembled as she read the note on her windshield: 'I know your secret.' Nervously, she scanned the parking lot filled with regular people. Who could possibly know?

Misunderstanding

Jane takes a bite of the cookie in her hand. She closes her eyes and smiles as she eats it.

When she opens her eyes, her face drops. There’s a note on the windshield of her car.

She scans the parking lot.

No one.

Everyone else had left already. She’d stayed back to wrap up some last minute work. The note could have been from anyone.

“I know your secret”.

How do they know? How could they possibly know?

She scrunched up the note and shoved it in her pocket. She got in her car and drove home.

That night at her house, she stayed up late, anxious of her surroundings.

Empty cans and packets litter the space. Fly’s buzz around her kitchen and dirty dishes fill her sink.

She is staring at her TV. It’s on but she’s not watching it. Not really. She’s running through every interaction she’s had all day.

She pulls the crumpled note from her pocket and unfolds it.

“Your secret”.

She looks back at her pantry. Her face sours.

She throws the note onto the floor and stares back at the TV, biting her nails.

DING!

Her phone lights up on the couch next to her.

COURTNEY:

“I know what you did!!!”

She jumps upright and throws the phone across the couch. She looks back at her pantry.

She picks her phone up and texts back frantically.

JANE:

“How??”

Her phone lights up again.

COURTNEY:

“I’ve got my eye on you 😉”

She panics.

JANE:

“If you come over, I’ll explain everything.”

COURTNEY:

“Uhh, it’s 9pm Jane”

JANE:

“I promise, I’ll explain everything”

COURTNEY:

“Alright girl, you’ve got some explaining to do, and I’ve got nothing better to do with my Friday night”

Jane scowls.

Jane stares up at the TV and it doesn’t feel like much time passes before there’s a knock at the door.

Jane jumps.

She opens the door.

Courtney stands, arms crossed.

“So why’d you do it?”

Jane doesn’t make eye contact.

“It was an accident…”

Courtney raises a brow.

“I don’t think what you did could be classed as an accident”

Jane bites her lip.

“Please just take a seat and I can explain everything”.

Courtney frowns but takes a seat.

Jane stands in front of her with her hands behind her back.

“I’m sorry that you got involved in this. You weren’t supposed to find out.”

Courtney snickers.

“Girl it’s not that serious—“

Jane duct tapes Courtney to the couch.

“Jane what the hell are you doing?”

Jane runs her hands through her hair.

“I just need to know you won’t tell anyone”

Courtney scowls.

“It’s just some cookies! It’s not that big a deal”

Jane freezes, her eyes widen.

“What?”

Courtney rolls her eyes.

“You took the cookies that were in the break room for Beth. She’s going for surgery next week. We all saw you take them but god Jane it’s just cookies.”

Jane sighs a deep breath of relief.

“Oh thank god”

Courtney furrows her brow.

“What? What did you think I was talking about?”

Jane’s eyes jump awake again.

“Uhh, nothing, just the cookies”

Courtney isn’t buying it.

Jane offers her a poor attempt at a grin. Behind her her pantry flies open and a body falls out and hits the floor.

Jane turns and sees the pantry door open.

“Oh f*ck!”

Courtney screams.

Jane tapes her mouth shut.

“Courtney, I promise, this is all just one big misunderstanding.”
