WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a scene between two characters who have suppressed their feelings for each other.

What features of dialogue or behaviour could you highlight in this kind of relationship?

A Surprised Day

Adela and Damien worked quietly together at the writing table, glancing over articles and books that needed annotating and editing.

Everyday, the two worked together under the supervision of Professor Plato, who was always too busy to properly watch and help the students on their assignments.

Adela and Damien were the only two Writing majors on campus, meaning they spent a lot of time together, whether they wanted to or not.

That day, a day so similar to others, Adela sat at her usual spot at the table, with a coffee in her hand. Damien was slowly sipping his black coffee from his cup, not showing any awareness of Adela’s arrival.

Adela sighed as she flipped through various copies of articles, her head in her hands. She had a rough morning, even though it was her birthday.

Adela was all alone at university. Lonely. Her family and friends were miles and miles away, while she was her, stuck doing work on her birthday.

Damien immediately saw something was wrong with Adela the moment she entered the room. As she worked studiously, he couldn’t help but look at her. Sometimes he’d admire her beauty and wish to tell her, but the words always seemed to dissolve on his tongue.

Not today.

“Adela,” Damien said. “You look pretty today.”

Adela blushed, smiling for the first time today. “Thank you,” she responded, not believing that Damien said that.

Usually the two didn’t talk much, yet when their eyes connected, it was as though they spoke a thousand things at once.

Right now, as the two were looking at each other, the same thought was swirling in each of their heads: “_I want you.”_

“Listen, Adela,” Damien started, “Today’s your birthday, Happy birthday by the way, and if you’re not doing anything, would you like to go grab dinner?”

Damien had been planning this for weeks.

Adela was shocked Damien cared, yet her heart swelled with happiness. She wouldn’t be alone on her birthday!

“Yes!” she replied, hardly containing her excitement.

So the two spent the rest of the workday talking about various things.

Professor Plato peaked in the room and smiled, seeing his two students fall in love.
