The Night Shift

I clocked in and took my badge off the wall, said a quick “hello” to the receptionist that’s went ignored. Then tip toed down the cold corridor to my ward. I worked in ththe dementia ward at the time, dealing with people who lost their minds years ago.

One of our regulars, Violet, who came here once a week for a check up, was stood in the hallway.

“Morning, Miss Violet. How are you today?”

She whispered something nonsensical under her breath.

“What was that darling?” I asked again, intrigued.

“Spiders.” Was all she said.

“There are no spiders here, Violet. C’mon let’s get you back in bed.” I took her hand and guided her to her room. She sat down, confused.

I smiled as I closed the door. I met with my supervisor on the ward who did hand-over with me. She told he how Violet had been seeing ‘spiders’ in the hallway. I assumed it was a hallucination so when I walked down the corridor I was very shocked.

Spiders. Everywhere, covering the walls. I screamed and many nurses showed up, surrounding me. All with a cautious look that turned to terror. A female nurse fainted and more doctors came into the hallway to help her up, their faces pale when they saw the arthropods covering the walls.

My hands were shaking as I took a photo and rushed off to my supervisor’s office. I couldn’t believe this, Violet was right.
