Plenty Of Time

I thought I was healthy,

I thought I was fine,

I thought I still had plenty of time.

One day I felt a little bit off,

For a while I had suffered a terrible cough,

But now I felt worse, in other ways,

So much so it was affecting my days.

I went to the doctor to hear what he said,

He thought it was nothing and advised rest in bed,

So I took myself home, and went straight to sleep,

I slept ever so well and ever so deep.

The next day I woke, feeling no better,

I felt ever so cold, so put on a sweater,

I spent the whole day just sitting around,

Then spent the whole evening having a lie down.

A weeks and weeks past And I still felt so bad,

So I Picked up the phone, and called my dad,

As soon as he heard me, he told me to leave,

The words the doc said he just did not believe.

So I made an appointment the very next day,

And went in, with my face looking pale and grey,

The doctor took one look at my terrible face,

Then opened the catch on his leather briefcase.

He pulled out a pad, and he started to write,

A prescription for drugs to make me alright,

Then I went to get the prescription filled,

And nearly died when I saw what I was billed.

So I started the course the very next day,

Hoping it would rid this feeling away,

But as the days past I was getting much worse,

So Booked an appointment, but saw the nurse.

The nurse took one look, and said with a frown,

I think the doctor was being a clown,

This illness you have is a serious thing,

You better get straight over to edenbrook wing.

I remember the name of that horrible wing,

The place where I had lost my everything,

My husband went there, he died there of cancer,

I pray that my fate does not have the same answer.

A nurse at the desk took me straight in,

And a doctor took a long long look at my skin,

He asked me some questions, and ran a few tests,

Then sent me on ward and tells me to rest.

I’m feeling nervous- sick actually,

Worried about what they will find within me,

A few hours later, the doctor comes back,

With news that hits me just like a huge smack.

We have the results and I’m sorry to say,

That you’ve unfortunately got cancer, and will need to stay,

A few rounds of chemo, and a minor op,

Will hopefully get all these symptoms to stop.

I went into theatre the very next day,

The lump was removed just before midday,

My dad came to see me, and brought me a gift,

And stuck around to give me a lift.

A few days later, I was feeling much better,

And three months later, a got a fantastic letter,

The cancer had gone, I was cancer free,

Oh how I jumped up snd down with glee!

Now I am healthy,

Now I am fine,

Now i still have plenty of time.
